Menstrual Health and Hygiene
In society, menstruation taboos have firm roots. What’s the result? Negligible discussion on the subject; in families, society leading to minimal information sharing towards the need for a menstrual hygiene system in vast sections of society.
These taboos are causing health problems among women that adversely affect their education and overall development.
Menstrual hygiene is a huge problem in India. It is not a subject that is openly discussed.
Hence, the scale of the problem and its devastating impacts are less known.
11 crore adolescent girls are vulnerable to poor menstrual hygiene
44% reported embarrassment and humiliation over restrictions.
87% of girls are dependent on unhygienic clothes as absorbents during their periods
6% of girls have never even heard of Sanitary pads!
60% of girls missing out on school.
23% leave school on reaching puberty
Only the Government and a few Individuals cannot solve the underlying problem.
The entire Civil Society needs to contribute to changing the mentality and health and hygiene of women.
